Carbs...friend or foe?

A few years ago, soon after I moved in with Mike, I tried a low carb, Atkins-ish diet, I lost about 12 lbs in 6 weeks so I was like, score! But then, I missed fruit and sugar so I made my way back to the world of bagels and muffins, its a wonderful world.
Recently I was feeling like a bit, puffy, so I thought, hey-lets try that low carb thing again. I did some research and it made sense to try and "eat like a caveman", meats, veggies, etc. Low on carbohydrates, light on dairy, lots o' protein. There are some effects on your body eating like this, ketosis being one...this is what it did to me: neon yellow pee, constipation and my breath smelled AWFUL! Plus I had a nasty taste in my mouth all day and felt like I was eating heart stopping amounts of cholesterol. All a big bunch of not good. And I also realized the cave men only lived until they were mid-20s maybe early 30s, it could be because they were eaten by a giant tiger or mountain lion or it could be they just needed a Bertucci's roll. (mmmmm...I swear they put something addictive in those!)

So I decided to eat normal again, and just avoid highly processed foods, which really aren't food anyway. I just always get caught up in the hype and want to do what works for everyone else but not for me. As always I am a work in progress.

Wild Brooke in the house

This past Friday night Mike and I took my 13 yr old cousin Brooke to the Red Sox game, she had never been and doesn't really know much about baseball. Mike was thrilled to be going with me and a 13 yr old girl. Before the first pitch I realized that it was FREEZING. It was about 35 degrees out at like 6:45pm so I went and bought myself a sweatshirt and Brooke a foam finger, I told her she could shove her hands in it when she got cold. In the 4th inning I realized Brooke's teeth were chattering so I told her I would go buy her a sweatshirt, she didn't want me too because of how much they were (Family friendly Fenway loves to jack up the prices) but the girl has no body fat on her so I bought her a sweatshirt and got us a blanket to share. I warned Mike that we weren't going to make it to the end and the Sox started to umm...suck so when it was 4-7 Toronto I said we had to leave. Mike was not pleased but dude it was FREEZING.

The next morning I went with the babies (not really anymore, they are almost 5 yr old twins and an almost 3 yr old) and their mother to Elmo Live! So Mike was going to be alone with Brooke for a few hours but I figured that she is 13 and she just wants to sleep in and watch Twilight or something. My Aunt and Uncle don't have cable at her house and we have super cable so I figured she would be all set. Mike was a tad concerned about being left alone with a 13 yr old girl, so this is our prep conversation:
Mike: "Well what am I going to do with her?"
Me: "You like teenage girl movies, watch Mean Girls or John Tucker Must Die"
Mike: "Well what does she eat?"
Me: "If you go get a bagel, buy her one."
Mike: "Well like what do I do with her?"
Me: "You don't have to braid her hair or pick out an outfit!"
In the afternoon I brought the kids back to our condo to eat lunch with Brooke, Owen stared at her for most of the lunch (5 yr old) and Mike and I went down for an afternoon nap. Brooke was in heaven...left alone with 400 channels and a lap top.

Lazy with a capital Laz

I feel like the most unproductive person EVAH. I find it impossible to just sit and do nothing, I don't know how people can just sit and do nothing every day. I feel guilty for today and its just 1 day. Yesterday was the Boston marathon so that could be why I feel like a lazy slug (my boss's favorite term) because um...I don't run much less run marathons. So yesterday I went to the gym, got waxed, returned bottles and cans (just clap yo hands!), grocery shopped and got my nails did. Today I got my car inspected, finished my final project for school (6 pages, single spaced) and did laundry. Then I took a nap but from doing that I feel like a lazy person. So now I am watching 16 and Pregnant to feel like a productive human being.
